What's it like to be a Biomedical Engineer?

As a Biomedical Engineer you will combine your engineering knowledge and understanding of medical sciences to design and create equipment, devices and computer software for use in the healthcare industry. Working as part of a team you may design computer software to run instruments, such as three-dimensional x-ray machines. Alternatively, you may use your knowledge of chemistry and biology to develop new drug therapies.

  • Designing equipment and devices such as internal organs, replacements for body parts, diagnostic machines, and software and computer programs for use by healthcare professionals.
  • Installing, maintaining and repairing biomedical equipment.
  • Evaluating the safety, efficiency and effectiveness of biomedical equipment.
  • Training clinicians and patients in the use of biomedical equipment.
  • Conducting research needed to solve clinical problems.
  • Conducting research into new drug therapies.
  • Writing technical reports and procedures, and publishing and presenting research findings.
